Maybe part of the question relates to whether a spectralgraphic display
yields the correct kind of information for analysis.
Two simple examples:
1. Look at a Bach Chorale sung by large choir in a reverberant setting:
does the spectrum yield analyticly useable information.
2. Look at the spectrogram of a noisy spectrum with a 1 kHz sine tone in
it. Add a 1,009 Hz sine tone: sounds different (?), but is 256 or 512
bands going to resolve what the ear hears immediately.
