CERTIFICATE IN SOUND DESIGN AND MUSIC TECHNOLOGY
JANUARY 2000

This is a one academic year, 15 guided learning hours per week programme
leading to a London Institute Certificate and a BTEC Professional
Development Award (dual certification). It is designed for students who
have some experience of producing original work using sound, music and
music technology or other media arts (film, video etc) or work experience
in the sound, music or related industries.

The course offers students the opportunity to build up a portfolio of
original work while developing their operational and practical skills and
theoretical background to a range of sound and music technology equipment,
methodologies and application areas including sound design for other
electronic media and performing arts. It is essentially practical and
provides students with the opportunity to pursue an intensive programme in
the practice of sound design and music technology using Apple Macintosh
based midi and digital audio workstations. It will be presented through a
series of lectures, seminars, workshops and project work.

We are based in the Media School at the London College of Printing where
there is a long tradition of courses in film, video and multimedia
production. While undertaking the course students are encouraged to make
links with students in other media areas and to make industrial and
professional contacts in the sound, media and performance industries.

The course is designed for students who wish to progress on to higher
education or to seek employment or freelance work. It will be delivered
through 15 timetabled contact hours per week. Formal teaching takes place
on a Monday. In addition students will be expected to study in their own
time and there will be some access to equipment outside the normal course
hours.

Entry Requirements
Entry normally requires a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C or equivalent.
Mature students who do not have these qualifications but who have relevant
work experience will be considered. Candidates should also have
experience of producing original sound, music or media work and should be
able to demonstrate a maturity of attitude to their work. Selected
candidates will be invited to attend an interview and will be required to
show examples of work at the interview.
