IMMERSION - 3 SURROUND SOUND CONCERT PRESENTATIONS
Co-Ordinated & Curated by Philip Samartzis in association with Experimenta
Cinemedia @ Treasury Theatre - Melbourne
11 - 13 June 1999
Immersion is a series of three concert presentations featuring seventeen
specially commissioned surround sound compositions by Australian and
international composers and sound artists who are exploring a diverse range
of methodologies in the exploration of sound in space. These concert
presentations will highlight the exciting developments in contemporary
sound spatialisation, where systems of reproduction and presentation have
been clearly extended beyond the stereo field to include surround,
immersive and 3 dimensional sound experiences.
Philip Samartzis, experimental sound artist (& lecturer in Sound at Media
Arts, RMIT) has curated the 3 surround sound concert presentations to
emphasise the diversity of work being conducted in the field. Immersion
contains no images or moving imagery. The focus is purely on the sensory
and tactile sensations of sound moving through a cinematic space.
The seventeen composers commissioned include; Australia - Philip Brophy,
Dave Brown, Tim Catlin, Alan Lamb, Darrin Verhagen; France - Anne-Sophie
Brabant Thomas Couzinier, Gregoire Couzinier, Isabelle de Mullenheim,
Bernard Parmegiani, Cecile Le Prado, Christian Zanesi; Denmark - Rasmus
Lunding, Line Tjornhoj-Thomsen; Netherlands - Arno Peeters; UK - Paul
Schutze; Canada - Hildegard Westerkamp;
As a component of Immersion, there will be a series of free artists talks
programmed across three days which will discuss the significance of
spatialisation within the compositional process. The artists talks will
1. French electroacoustic composer Bernard Parmegiani, who will present a
talk on the theory behind the development of the Acousmonium (100 speaker
sound system) which is currently housed at Radio France in Paris.
2. Melbourne based academic Philip Brophy, who will discuss the development
of Dolby surround sound and how that has contributed to the development of
more sophisticated film sound.
3. French electroacoustic composer Cecile Le Prado, who is currently
conducting 3D sound research at IRCAM in Paris, will discuss the creative,
ideological and aesthetic based processes of composing for space.
