In a different domain, cinema:

A film director may well be the improvisational kind (Agnes Varda,
Pialat, Cassavettes), but a script (resp., score) can be made
afterwards.

It is not prescriptive (you don't really expect it to be re-acted
from the script -- on stage, perhaps?), but it has the structure,
which is useful for various purposes: mixing, copyrighting (?),
publishing in print, etc.

(I was reading yesterday notes by A. Varda about a sequence of her
1985 film Sans Toit Ni Loi); largely improvised, or written up
only minutes before the shooting; but meticulously noted during the
shooting, along with comments on why a take was good or not good).
