When teaching first year college students in the US, you have to
make it explicit that they have the freedom to express their
opinions. Because in high school they did not. Also, they need
to be told explicitly that bullying will not be tolerated in
the classroom, as any student who was different in high school has
probably been mistreated by peers. They have to know that they
can go out on a limb, and if they crash they will have a safety
cushion to land on.
