Most years I let the students hear at least one of my pieces, and talk a bit
about how I wrote it an what's in it. I feel that teaching composition is a
really personal thing, and the students might as well know what I'm truly,
truly into. Also, however deeply you try to study someone else's music, it's
only really in your own pieces that you know where the bodies are buried.
I did a class like this just the other day; first class of the new term, as
a matter of fact. Went very well indeed, threw up an extremely sparky
discusssion about all sorts of things I probably wanted to talk to them
about anyway. I think it's a valid thing to do, at least sometimes.
