i am really enjoying this thread on compression systems. as a curator for of a net-label of electro-acoustic compositions i want to ensure that the artist's work that is presented is representative of what they were hearing when they finished composing the work. Our latest release is available as FLAC, OGG, and MP3. i have looked as spectral analysis of audio compressed in different formats and with the higher quality variable bit-rates the fidelity seems pretty good up to 18kHz.
however i am in solid agreement with miriam that the focus should be on free/open source lossless, solutions!
