After doing some research on solid state recorders, I decided to get one of
these. I can confirm that replacing 8 AA batteries is a big pain. There is an
optional DC power source you can buy for the unit from Fostex.

The sound quality is great. The unit is very quiet. XLR input and phantom
power mean you can high quality microphones without having to use potentially
problematic adaptors. The manual says usb file transfor is not supported for
Mac computers but I tried it anyway and it worked perfectly (I'm running
Panther).
