There were some very funny passages about this practice in David Lodge's
"Small World" -- images
of english professors fltying around the world in jet planes to read to
each other marginally varied versions
of papers they'd read to each other at other conferences. I was at the
SMT a few years in Toronto,
and overheard something like

"I'd love to continue this conversation but I've got a plane to catch."
    "The London conference?"
    "Yes."
"Great -- we can pick up from there."

Why bother leaving this room?
