That certainly is sad. I first heard Hugh on record with the Music
Improvisation Company, then got to see him perform when he came to Toronto
as part of a New Music Concerts series in the early '80s. A few years
later I even got to play a device of his (name escapes me at the moment -
if it even had one) at an exhibition of sound sculpture at the
Huddersfield Public Library.
He was a crucial influence on my current use of found- and everyday
objects for sound generation. I am now in two different ensembles using
such things, one of which (a trio called Odradek) just finished doing some
recording a couple of hours ago. Should some of it end up on a release
I'll make sure a dedication is included.
