This year¹s SOUNDplay events collectively focus on 'visual music'
works that integrate video and sound art. Each evening is a
different multi-media presentation of live performances, video
screenings, and mixed media works including works by Marcelle
Deschênes, Kristi Allik, Robert Mulder, Raylene Campbell, Matt
Rogalsky, Alain Pelletier, and Jean Piché. World premières include
Jean Piché¹s "Sieves" for HD Video, Raylene Campbell¹s "I Dream Eye"
for video, sculpture, electronics and accordion and "Around RadioRoad
Movies" an interactive computer installation by Chantal Dumas,
Christian Calon and Don Sinclair that documents a 20,000 KM
cross-Canada road trip. Also included is a workshop with David and
Gisela Gamper "See Hear Now: Visible Music"

See Hear Now: Visible Music
Workshop with David and Gisela Gamper
November 7th 1-4pm @ Latvian House, 491 College Street $35
Limited spaces available / naisa@soundtravels.ca to register

David and Gisela will discuss and demonstrate the performance tools
they developed for their collaboration, See Hear Now: Visible Music.
They offer participants an opportunity to experiment in this
environment using these performance systems - David uses Max/MSP
programming to create his performer controlled sound processing
environment for his improvised acoustic music and Gisela uses
multiple laptops and video mixing to create her high resolution video
transformations. They'll discuss their installation concept aimed at
creating an immersing sound and image environment.

Matinée Performance/Artist Talk led by Victoria Fenner with artists
Jean Piché, Raylene Campbell, David and Gisela Gamper presenting
their works.
November 5 begins @ 1 pm PWYC (free for students with ID), ends with SOUNDwalk

"Sieves."

The 9:30 pm show features the triple screen works "eXpress" "Bharat"
and "Spin" by Jean Piché. "Piche's 'eXpress'Š. uses images shot from
and of trains. They quickly blur into a digital wash that then
crystallizes into kinetic bursts of colour on the screen. The effect
is mesmerizing. 'Bharat' takes as its starting point Mahatma Gandhi's
last known recording in EnglishŠ The text is first projected on the
screen and we then enter an impressionistic video treatment of three
sites in India. These are married to an electronic score that evokes
the harmonics of Indian music." Alan Conter, Globe and Mail,

The digital media space has given rise to a new poetry, anchored in
the manipulation of audio samples and visual pixels. It is not cinema
nor is it only music. It may be considered an entirely new artistic
form some calling it 'visual music'. Examples will be given of how
this new language can be developed outside of narrative and simple
metaphor.
