Hi Sandra / list

I have two kids of my own who both responded very early to both sound
and rhythm. In fact one of my sons responded to rhythm almost
immediately (and in fact while still in the womb) - he still responds
to rhythms and sounds far more than melody. In fact it is the sound
quality that he goes for (he's 9 years old now) and he finds
musicality associated with it. We haven't taught him that there
should be a difference between music and sound and he seems to have
an unbiased appreciation for any sounds he hears or creates himself.
One of his favourite activities is to listen to radio programmes in
foreign languages and playing with the dial to create a rhythm with
it.

Anyway, my other son enjoys music and responds very differently to
sounds and also responded to rhythm at a much earlier age (1-2 years
old - he's now 12) than he did melody.

How much their environment played a factor on their responses, I
don't know. But I have never emphasized an appreciation of music
over an appreciation of sound whether organized or not.
