Of course the voice is the origin, and perhaps language spawned the
syntactical structure, but the authority of its hierarchical
system comes from an assumption regarding axiomatic manifestations in
"nature", that, in more than "our discipline" has been recognised as, if
not entirely arbitrary - certainly contingent. And therefore lacking in
any deterministic authority.
My reference to the violin goes beyond the most nimble fingered to the
almost unlimited possibillity of "stops" on the glissando horizon.
