for PC users there's Coagula and BMP to Wave... I don't know how comparable
the programs are to Metasynth.... but it's the same principle.
BMP to Wave is decidedly lo-fi, although you can do neat things by using it
to obtain spectrograms of sounds, tweaking them in Photoshop and then
Coagula is pretty interesting, with an interface to draw sounds as well... I
haven't used either extensively but they are both fascinating.
