In OS 10.3, its a .pdf file. In earlier versions of X (10.1 and
possible 10.2), it's a .tiff file.
To take a screenshot in .tiff format under 10.3, use the Grab
application in Applications/Utilities. It is more flexible than using
the key commands anyway. Some Macs also came with Ambrosia Software's
(www.ambrosiasw.com) Snapz Pro, so you could use that as well (although
users who got it with their Macs are not entitled to free upgrades, and
the version for 10.2 may not like 10.3 much, so just use Grab).
Where do I acquire all this useless knowledge?
