Of the recorders I've used -- Nomad, iRiver & Sony MiniDisc -- the Nomad was the only one that had serious problems. It would sometimes (for no observable reason) refuse to save a large (1GB+) file after it had been recorded.
Of these three, the only one with manual volume control (I'm assuming you mean adjustable volume *during* recording as opposed to just adjustable before recording starts) is the MiniDisc recorder.
So: if you're not interested in using a preamp or other hardware volume control, you may have to choose between compressed files (MiniDisc) and uncompressed files but no adjustable volume during recording (iRiver or Nomad).
