    Weight / Load cells

"strain gage load cells dominate the weighing industry. Pneumatic load cells are sometimes used where intrinsic safety and hygiene are desired, and hydraulic load cells are considered in remote locations, Strain gage load cells offer accuracies from within 0.03% to 0.25% full scale and are suitable for almost all industrial applications." -- This link was checked on Mar-01-2004source

    Microscope for nanotech

A scanning tunneling microscope (STM) places an atomically sharp point with a small voltage potential near a sample material and, by measuring the number of electrons that jump across the gap–physicists use the term "tunneling"–creates an accurate representation of the structure. Atoms then can be moved by electrical repulsion or attraction. An atomic force microscope (AFM) is a variation on the STM theme. The small upward and downward movements of the tip needed to maintain a constant force of contact on a surface is used to produce images. A scanning probe microscope (SPM) operating in a "tapping mode" can record variations of friction as a tip is dragged across a sample. It can also nudge individual atoms from place to place.
