Transduction: a venture into the realms of sonic abstraction. Concert Proposal: As a practice that concerns the synthesis and production of sound, Electroacoustics (E/A) is a field where compositions are concieved within the wide boundaries of timbre and time. the most commonly known sounds that could relate to E/A is that of dance music or electronica. The sounds that are found within these genres merely skim the depths that emboies sonic art. The field is slowly growing, yet remains obscure to common knowlege as a practice within the scope of Fine Arts. Thus, the Art Matters festival is a perfect opportunity to expose the public to a world of sounds that is beyond the mainstream path. The students of the electroacoustics department at Concordia would like to present "Transduction : a venture into the realms of sonic abstraction. " The main ideas of the concert is to: a) expose the public to the world of E/A b) expose student work, and, provide a chance for students to experience multi-disciplinary aspects of an E/A concert d) exemplify the creative interpretations of "music" and "sound design" This is concert intended for emerging E/A artists to not only publicize their work, but to expand the creative process from personal work to a group production. Transduction: the process where energy is recieved from one system and re-transmitted, often in another form, to another. This is one of the single-most defining prinicples of Electroacoustics and occurs on many levels. For this concert a manner of transduction would occur on many levels. One is by having a composition amplified and manipulated over a multi-phonic sound system, a performance aspect in E/A called "diffusion." The other apsect would be the process by which the individual and collective efforts of artists would be transmitted into the produciton of a concert. The creative enrgy produced through the concert would be recieved by the public in theform of an informative and memorable experience. The proposed collaborative project will have 3 distinguishing aspects. 1) A unique multi-phonic sound system designed for the purpose of diffusion and real-time signal processing. 2) A designed environment that addresses the general ambiance of the venue. 3) The encorporation of visual projections. Though it is traditionally not a part of e/a concerts, the use of visuals enhances or contributes to the overall performance and ambiance of the concert. With multi-media applications, and, by focussing other artistic fields into a single cause, the combined energy will ensure that the concert will amaze the public with artistic wizardry. This project involves the talent, work and dedication of many individuals coming together to spread the awareness and enjoyment of sonic art.
