The final project is compositional in nature. The creative process requires discipline, of time and of the mind, and the four preliminary studies contribute to this. The course meets in seminar format on Tuesday 12:30 - 2:00 and Thursday 12:30 - 3:45. Most of the class work is discussion about on-going projects and matters technical, aesthetic and compositional. Students are expected to contribute to every class, and to present something once every two weeks (minimum). An important reference book is: The Computer Music Tutorial by Curtis Roads - ISBN 0-262-68082-3, 1904 pp., 504 illus. $68.00 (US) but available for less. $41 US at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0262680823/002-4388521-5683267?v=glance&n=283155 Assignments: (A) Technical Studies (2) (B) Research Paper Portfolio (2) (C) Final Project Technical Studies (2) (20% total) There are two technical studies to be handed in. Each study will present detailed research and work on two (2) technical matters. Details to be discussed in class. The work is to be an audio CD, with supporting documentation of approximately 300 - 1,000 words sent as an email attachment. Due: Tuesday January 31, and Tuesday February 28 Research Paper Portfolio (2) (20% total) There are two Research Paper Portfolios to be handed in. One paper will present detailed research and work on a specific technical matter, the other paper will present detailed research on some specific aesthetic matter. The work is to be a Word readable document of approximately 600 - 1,000 words. To be sent as an email attachment. Due: Thursday February 09, and Tuesday March 07 Final Project (60% total) All projects must be approved. A detailed description is due by Tuesday February 14. The work is to be an audio CD and a separate Word readable document (program note) of approximately 200 - 800 words. To be sent as an email attachment. Due: Thursday, April 20 Please be sure to read the University Policy related to academic misconduct. The single largest problem for students here is that: if you quote / copy another persons work, you M-U-S-T give the reference. If you work with another student, you M-U-S-T give acknowledgement and credit for their work. Be sure to provide references for everything that is not your own. Please. How I correct / review the work handed in. I open one Word document and copy over the file you hand in. The file contains the work of every student for the whole semester. Word does the spelling check, and if I think I have read it before somewhere, a simple Find will turn it up. Google will do the same if it might be an un-referenced web source. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Evaluation A all projects excellence; detailed, well researched and finely crafted B all projects well done; somewhat vague, researched and adequately presented C all projects completed; obscure or lacking in focus, weak in research and poorly presented The and + annotations will be given to balance out the relative aspects of these requirements. There is no D grading, no supplemental and no INC. The final deadline for all work is one week after the last class Kevin Austin Instructor 2006 I 16 BPQfg! 1 v | + ?
