This course based upon music notation and sequencing software explores an expanded range of practices and ideas through a number of preparatory studies, and three major projects. The first 6 – 8 weeks of the course are devoted to the initial exploration of a number of ideas including basic instrumentation, ranges of acoustic and extended ranges of sampled instruments, rhythm, intervals, scales and triads. During the time problems of using software will be resolved. Materials will be presented and students are expected to show their work in class for detailed feedback at least once every three weeks. Work should also be sent to me on a regular basis for comment and feedback. Files should be sent as email attachments, with the score as pdf, and the sound as mp3. Assignments and Grading Assignment One: Preliminary Studies A number of preliminary studies will be given out, including studies in instrumentation, rhythm, basic concepts of theory (intervals, scales, chords) etc. During the year, other studies will be assigned as required. Assignment Two: Analysis, orchestration and elaboration I The first movement of the Mozart Piano Sonata in F is the assigned work. A formal harmonic analysis is to be prepared. The piece will also be orchestrated using and extended MIDI-based orchestra. When this has been completed, this MIDI file is to be elaborated, both within the MIDI sequence (notation program), and by exporting the MIDI file to a sequencer and elaborating it in various studio-based ways. Work is to be presented in an on-going fashion in class and by sending me draft versions of the assignment. Due date: Friday, December 14, 17:00, audio CD, and, pdf files as an email attachment. Assignment Three: Analysis, orchestration and elaboration ][ The Gymnopedie I of Eric Satie is the assigned work. A formal analysis is to be prepared, from which a number of basic compositional rules will be derived. The piece will also be orchestrated using an extended MIDI-based orchestra (MIDI-strated). Based on the rules derived from the analysis, an original composition will be created. It will be MIDI-strated. When this has been completed, the MIDI file is to be elaborated, both within the MIDI sequence (notation program), and by exporting the MIDI file to a sequencer and elaborating it in various studio-based ways. An extended original composition will be created utilizing many of the techniques and ideas explored during the year. It will be MIDI-strated using a greatly extended MIDI orchestra.
