:)
This is fine; many a famous musician had/have day jobs, some at early
stages and some throughout their careers... I believe it adds to your
experience, personality, and sources of inspiration.
Philip Glass, for instance, worked as plumber and taxi driver; on one
occasion, while he already had some fame and still drove a taxi, a
passenger looked at his personal license card and told him there was
also a composer by that name... (or so the story tells). Steve Reich was
also a taxi driver (look what it did to their music...).
Charles Ives, famously, owned an insurance agency throughout his career.
As a musician I had quite a few jobs myself: a census supervisor, a
print house's storage employee and driver, yellowpages salesperson,
library staff, airline security officer, call center operator and even
a diplomatic courier... whatever was necessary to feed my musical needs
(and belly of course).
I have learned that whatever job you undertake, it is much more
enjoyable when you do it with attention, thought, care and creativity.
The American modernist poet Wallace Stevens, for instance, was referred
to as a "very imaginative claims man" in the insurance company he worked
in. ("In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun," or so
Disney's Mary Poppins wants us to believe...)
