I don't think there's anything wrong with direct
action - there's a distinguished tradition of it -
think Boulez v Stravinsky, Andriessen v Stockhausen. I
dislike people who boo at Birtwistle concerts, but
perhaps that just reflects my own taste and where I'm
coming from musically. Of course, this action seems
more justifiable when on behalf of a 'progressive'
cause, not a regressive one but now I guess the
progressive and regressive could be any way around. It
doesn't seem that it was mere envy that sparked this
particular instance, that there was a wider basis to
it but I would suggest that direct protests of this
sort could be useful - I can think of some
high-profile popular musicians who have done things
distinctly unhelpful to those struggling on the
fringes, particularly regarding copyright enforcement
(which curbs the opportunity for composers to get
their work a free audience) and PRS subsidies (certain
save the-world campaigners implicated). Not mentioning
any names, though...
