I did once successfully collaborate with a
choreographer who was open to everything from the
start, and we had a two-way dialogue going through the
course of the collaboration; in fact what I came up
with, often in response to her original ideas,
influenced the way she thought about and structured
the piece. What I find dispiriting, and is what I have
experienced recently, is the attitide of some
dance-schools and companies that to do anything
markedly different from the usual might alienate
potential audiences and prove insurmountably difficult
to work with; I mean, how do you know if you haven't
tried it?
