Red Book just refers to the CD-DA (Digital Audio) standard. It's what you get when you go out and buy CDs. If you use CD-R as your format for a CD Duplication Master you have to use the Red Book format which mostly just adds sub-code (non-audio code) to be able to make the glass master disc. When you burn an audio disc that isn't Red Book standard, it's still red book compatible and so should play in most players. I haven't actually come across a situation where that format issue was what kept a disc from playing. That's more to do with the differences between manufactured CDs and burned CDs. The technology is really quite different. A replicated CD is actually stamped out and punches holes (pits) in a metal surface (usually aluminum, sometimes gold) whereas a burned CD uses a dye layer which has its reflective qualities changes by the laser.
I don't know off hand of a red book site, but I wouldn't be surprised if one exists. Need to do some careful searching I guess.

    Hope that's helpful.

Hello Andrew et al.

please discuss / "elucidate" a bit more on Red Book ... i've heard of it in conversation, but have never used it. i've rarely had trouble with Yamaha CDWriter. Knock on Wood! / Metal / Plastic ... ! i understand some older CD players may not read CDrs and Red Book will "fix this". only one person couldn't play the CDr burnt on Yamaha ... and Red Book was then recommended by music/studio producer. he recommended checking out the red book site. now, that i've heard of it twice, i'll do a search. do you have any links?

thanks, best regards and cheers, macCormac / sylvi
