latest wisdom on burn speeds?

I'm trying to sort out an issue that I suspect others on this list
have wrestled with - how to reconcile the conventional wisdom of
always burning audio CDs at 2x (supposed optimum pit depth for audio
CD players) with the fact that many new burners won't burn at less
than 4x.

I've been nursing along a very crabby Yamaha CDR 400 just because I'm
paranoid to defy convention (about this anyway).

Does anyone have more up-to-date info on this ?
Is it possible (he said hopefully) that the combination of newer
media and burners has eliminated the need for the slower audio burns ?

Fiddling while (insert title) burns.........
