Subject: ICMA candidate statements

Here are the ICMA board candidates and their statements that were
posted on 9/17/01. The names in parentheses are those who nominated
the respective candidates.

Jon Appleton (Martin Fumerola, Bonnie Miksch)
"The ICMA needs to redefine its mission. The approach to research and
composition have become largely ossified due to the insular nature of
the organization leadership and a reluctance to deal with the broad
aesthetic that characterizes computer music today. In the meantime most
of the tools used by its membership are extended and creatively explored
by composers with no academic affiliation, particularly in Europe, Asia
and Latin America. Inclusion of these constituencies would reinvigorate
 the organization. "

Richard Boulanger (Luigi Castelli, John Fitch)
"For over 20 years, I have dedicated myself to the exploration of the
field of computer music as a composer, performer, researcher, author,
and editor. What I discovered along the way, I shared through my
teaching, writing and music. At this time in my life, I want to make a
more direct contribution to the field by serving on the ICMA Board and
helping continue to the important work they do to support our incredibly
diverse community of artist and scientists."

Ambrose Field (Larry Austin, Dave Malham)
"Ambrose Field is a composer of electroacoustic music working in the
UK. He is director of the renowned electroacoustic studios at York,
 England.
As a director of ICMA, my main endevour would be to strengthen links
between Europe and the rest of the world. There is much more scope for
two-way interchange that is at present taking place. This could be on a
variety of levels: concert exchanges, smaller events assisting local
communities, and even perhaps even collaborative work. In Europe, we are
lucky to have some first-rate composers. However, it can be a struggle
(often due to national politics and funding arrangements) to promote the
work of new artists. Thus, I would aim to assist those who are just
joining the field, as well as our established composers and researchers.
We are part of a global community, so let's share ideas and aim for
 progress on a larger scale!"

John Fitch (Richard Boulanger, Luigi Castelli)
"After many years as a mathematician and computer geek I discovered
computer music, and at last I have found my home. I have contributed my
software efforts to the community, especially in Csound, and now I want
to contribute to the whole community by serving on the committee. My
main interests are in education, of both artists and technicians, and
what they can teach each other. I would be honored to serve."

Daniel Oppenheim (Joran Rudi, Christopher Penrose)
"I have been active in the computer music community both as composer and
developer since the late 80s. For the past eight years I have been a
member of the computer music center at IBM research. My focus has always
been on improving the support for the creative process of music
composition. During the past two decades I sadly witnessed a
transformation whereby our community has gradually lost its leadership
position in providing the world both vision and state-of-the-art music
technology. Nowadays, this is driven primarily by industry. I would like
to see the community regain a respectful position and make valuable
contributions to society. I think this could be achieved through raising
our scientific standards and coordinating our resources, activities, and
 research agendas."

Joseph Waters (Rodrigo Sigal, Joseph Waters)
"Joseph Waters is Director of Electro-Acoustic and Media Composition at
San Diego State University.  He has extensive experience in running new
music organizations.  In 1983 he co-founded and managed Network for New
Music in Philadelphia, and is currently founder and artistic director of
NWEAMO (North West Electro- Acoustic Music Organization), based in
Portland, OR.  NWEAMO is currently mounting its 3rd Annual International
Festival (Oct 5 & 6), which is entitled “NWEAMO 2001: Also sprach DJ
Zarathustra”.  The mission of NWEAMO is to build the audience for
electro-acoustic music by fostering interconnections between the
classical electronic avant-gaard and underground, alternative
electronica.   As educator his goal is '..to blow the doors off academia
and let in all types of music.'   His music was featured in the keynote
concert at ICMC—Beijing, and may be heard in the listening room concerts
 at ICMC—Cuba."

Noel Zahler (Ozgur Izmirli, Robert Rowe, Horacio Vaggione)
"I have been Chair of the Music department at Connecticut College for 9
years. I am also the Director and founder of the Cummings Electronic
and Digital Sound Studios (CEDS) and the Connecticut College Center for
Arts and Technology. The Center produces the biennial Connecticut
College Arts and Technology Symposium which has been going on since
1985. As a composer, I have been active in the computer music community
since I was an undergraduate in 1972. My research embraces interactive
technologies (score following in particular), as well as, artificial
intelligence and music, and computer assisted composition tools. My
publications have appeared in Computer Music Journal, Interface,
Leonardo, and ICMA Proceedings and Proceedings of other major
conferences too numerous to list. I believe I bring to the ICMA Board a
great deal of international experience, as well as knowledge in
administration, fundraising, and conference production, Furthermore, I
bring insight into the needs, interests, and strengths of smaller
academic institutions and ways in which they too can make powerful
 contributions to the ICMA."

EUROPE (VOTE FOR 2 IN THIS CATEGORY IF YOU LIVE IN THIS REGION)

Leigh Landy (Joran Rudi, Horacio Vaggione)
"My work involves computer/electroacoustic music composition and related
studies, focusing on issues of this music being presented in cross-arts
contexts as well as its being made accessible to a wide audience. My key
interest within the ICMA is to address the balance between exciting
technological development work and equally exciting, but less emphasized
work in the theoretical, aesthetic and social aspects of this music. I
am reasonably well networked and would support the diversity of European
 activities within the ICMA."

Francois Pachet (Vincent Puig, Horacio Vaggione)
"Civil Engineer, Ph.D., board member of the French associations for
Computer Music (JIM conferences). Assistant Professor at Paris 6
University, I head a research team in Sony CSL laboratory since 1997 in
musical metadata and interactive music systems. I wish to promote a
closer relationship between the research community and the world of
popular music (Jazz, Techno/House, etc.), by encouraging the use of
computer music systems in concerts or events, and enlarging the
attendance of ICMA to all areas of the computer music chain, from
 cognition to popular music composition."

Xavier Rodet (Vincent Puig, Michael Clark)
"My research interests are in the areas of signal and pattern analysis,
recognition and synthesis. I have been involved in Computer Music
activities such as ICMC since 1979 and this has given me many
opportnities to appreciate the work done by Board of Directors for many
years. I also wish to promote research and applications in the field,
 especially in the European Community.
-A better interdisciplinary relationship beween music and science,
favoring deep musical aspects (e.g. publications by composers about
music) and high level scientific activities (publications in particular).
-An improved collaboration between industry and research institutions in
 the E.C.
-Promotion of working groups within the ICMA in the domains which I know
such as Human Computer Interaction and Gestural Capture and Applications
to sound synthesis, understanding of the structure of timbre spaces,
development of improved control concepts and applications,
analysis/synthesis tools adapted for composers’ needs.
-Cooperative buiding of reference and test sound and parameter databases
which permit the improvment of algorithms and applications."

 Jøran Rudi (Incumbant)
"I state that I am willing to continue to serve a second term on the
ICMA board of directors if elected.  I have for the last four years
served as both board member and ARRAY co-editor, as well as publications
coordinator, responsible for the website.  I have attended every board
 meeting during these years.
My daily work is as director of a computer music studio currently at the
University of Oslo, a position that I have held for 7 years.  I believe
that my knowledge of computer music and my familiarity with the
international milieu can benefit ICMA in its efforts to strive for
bettering the field and placing it more prominently in the public eye."
