Subject: ICMC2002 Conflict with Yom Kippur

Dear Colleagues,
Best wishes for a happy and peaceful new year.
The ICMA has received two complaints from Dennis Miller and Vivian
Adelberg Rudow (see below) regarding the dates of ICMC2002 conflicting
with Yom Kippur.
Please know that the elected board of directors for the ICMA does not
purposely schedule the ICMC to conflict with holy days. As Vivian states,
the board takes many things into consideration when a conference proposal
is accepted including potential to meet the artistic and technical demands
of the ICMC, budget, venues and personnel resources. Please know that the
board expends a great deal of energy cultivating potential hosts and later
working with the hosts to ensure the success of the conference.
The contract for ICMC2002 was signed at ICMC2000, long before the
discussion regarding the dates of the ICMC last year. Please know that
in the future, the elected board will do everything possible to encourage
the host to schedule in a way that is more sensitive to the needs of the
membership. Contracts for ICMC2003 and beyond have not yet been signed.
We have received other complaints from our American members with positions
in higher education that the conference always conflicts with the start of
the academic year. There has been discussion among board members about
shifting the conference later in the year which would help solve two
problems.
On behalf of the organization, I apologize for this gross oversight and
will be more sensitive to these needs in the future.
Mary Simoni

Amazing but true, this year's conference begins on Yom Kippur, the holiest
day of the Jewish year. Must we go through this each year? One would think
that something had been learned from the experience of last year.
