hi list,
i have been quite enjoying this discussion!
unfortunately, i do not have much to say
regarding the dialog and sfx realm of LOTR,
however, i wanted to join in and give my two
cents regarding the music.
i saw the film on openning night. i was quite
impressed by the faithful adaptation of the story
to screen, especially in terms of visuals. i
blush to admit that i did fall asleep for a good
half an hour of the film...it was just way to hot
in that theatre...
here is my rant of the day:
i was very disappointed to find that Wojciech
Kilar had NOT composed the score (as advertised
in the earlier LOTR trailers!!!) unfortunately, i
have heard that he has taken ill, and so, i guess
Howard Shore got the gig!
although i do really like the work of Shore, i
think that the more gothic style of Kilar would
have been much better suited for this film... of
course this is all a very subjective issue and i
hope that nobody is offended by my comments,
but, i found this score was stale, and not one of
Shore's better works. there was no spark, no
melody that moved me or stirred anything in me.
my heart was just not in that emotional zone that
music often brings us to.
i do admit however, that sometimes after hearing
a piece several times, it can grow on you...
but...my first impression was not to rush out and
buy this score for my collection, that's for
sure.
as a composer of music and an avid film viewer, i
feel that out of the many good score composers
out there, there are only a few who really do
wonderful things MUSICALLY for films,
for instance Michael Nyman, Wojciech Kilar, Danny
Elfman, Yann Tiersen, and Tan Dun... (to name a
few)...
the LOTR score could have been much more rich,
moving, dark and powerful, without being too
extravagant or having that typical hollywood
sound.
my best regards,
sandra chechik.
