I have a "friend of a friend" who was one of the primary sound
designers for LOTR:FOTR. I wonder what he would think about this
thread...
Anyway, I saw the film on opening (mid)night and personally did not
find the audio distracting or disjunct, but then I was too busy a)
enjoying myself, b) being distracted by some of the textual changes,
c) mentally criticising the Howard Shore score. Next time I'll pay
more attention to the sonic design.
Looking back (listening back?) I would have enjoyed a little more
imaginative use of sound, but then it's a fine line between creating
a rich sonic 'vision' and letting the environment distract from the
narrative.
