Following on from the recent sketching thread (and my own current analytical
work), I wondered if any work had been done on the use of graphic scores in
the analysis of e-a music ? - particularly the process of making such a
score.
Pointing to some point on a page is obviously the easiest way of referring
to features of a piece 'outside of time, but it seems graphic scores are
used a lot in analysis, often rather 'invisibly' without any acknowledgement
of the 'how'.
Maybe by examining the process of making a graphic score, especially
repeatedly as we get to know a piece, we could learn at lot about how we
learn about a piece and develop an understanding of it (ideas of basic
materials + segmentation) ?
Or would the sketching tell us more about our visual imaginations than sonic
ones (surely they connect somewhere?)?
