Sharing of the results
of a collaborative AHRC Research Project

By January 12th, Sarah Rubidge (Reader in Digital Performance at
University of Chichester) and Stan Wijnans (Interactive soundartist and
system developer from Bath Spa University) will have just completed the
second stage of their collaborative research into movement tracking
system. This has entailed preliminary choreographic investigations into
the possibilities for interactive performance offered by a prototype of
an innovative RF/Ultrasound 3D movement tracking system (developed by
Stan Wijnans, SurroundAV, London and V2, the Netherlands) and newly
designed 3D ambisonics surround sound MAX patches (Dave Hunt).
These technologies have been integrated by Stan Wijnans to create an
interactive 3D choreosonic environment which supplies dancers with the
possibility not merely to design and modulate the created sound in
realtime, but also to spatialize sound in a three dimensional
environment as they dance. Dancers from Lila Dance Company have worked
with Sarah Rubidge to develop choreographic systems that will facilitate
a choreography of sound and movement within this environment.
The sharing will discuss ways in which movement and spatialized sound
might be explored together in interactive performance settings, along
with the technical issues that have arisen during the research and the
ways that these have been addressed. A short demonstration of the system
in operation will be presented with two dancers from Lila Dance Company.
For further details please contact Sarah Rubidge on s.rubidge@gmail.com
or Stan Wijnans on stanx@xs4all.nl.
The research has been funded by the AHRC under the auspices of their
Small Grants Scheme and Knowledge Exchange at the University of
Chichester. Support in kind has been provided by V2, SurroundAV, and the
University of Chichester Dance Department.
