I back up regularly to my 248 GB Maxtor hard drive. I also, of course,
back up to CD-R. So far, so good. I have suffered 2 hard drive failures
in the last 15 years of using a NeXt machine, an SGI O2, and my Mac
PB-G4 laptop. One needs lots of redundancy with back up systems.

The risk of media becoming obsolete or worse yet physically unreadable before they are taken over by a competent archivist who can transfer and maintain them is obvious.
