"Most music makers believe that they convey something meaningful when they make/compose/perform music.
We can safely assume that computers do not believe that.
But they also make/compose/perform music."
Uh ... hang on ... this sounds like a priori assumptions, not a question.

Hi James
I did not ask if YOU as an individual SEE a difference (that is the framing part i said I was not interested in)
I asked precisely if there is a study out there about whether listeners EXPERIENCE one...
Also: I should have said "composition/improvisation algorithms" instead of "computers".
After all, computers are somewhat like uber-swiss army knives...

Neither do pianos or violins ......... etc.
Humans play the pianos and violins and
humans play (perhaps program) the computers.
I don't see any difference, myself.

Hi John
my terms are uncertain because I am starting to grapple with them.
I am interested in the following question:
Most music makers believe that they convey something meaningful when they make/compose/perform music.
But they also make/compose/perform music.
Is this difference in intentionality discernible to and/or relevant to the audience that listens to music ?
(And I am not concerned here with questions of framing like in "I am listening to computer music because I believe it is important to advance the ways music can be made" or "I feel important in listening to music by Beethoven because it shows how refined I am" etc - I am interested in direct, if culturally conditioned, responses like: "this music makes me cry" or "when I hear this music, I feel transported and elated" etc)
Hope this is a bit clearer.
Best
Sandeep
