It really depends on your specific needs and price range. A PC will give you a wide range to choose almost exactly the components you do and don't want.
Things to consider:
- Will it be used for performance? Production? Recording? Multimedia work?
- This can then help decide whether you do/don't need a large hard drive(High/low speed), fast video card, big display, multi-core CPU, high capacity battery, selection of ports, etc.
- For example, you might find that you don't need a large hard drive because you rely on external storage most of the time. Instead you could invest in a smaller, solid-state hard drive that will be fast, reliable, and resistant to damage from falls.
- If the laptop will be for production and mostly stationary, it will give you more freedom from aspects like weight and battery life, and maybe you could get a large display screen instead.
- Back to your question, I have been partial to IBM/Lenovo, ASUS, and have heard good things about more 'premium' brands like Alienware that are geared towards gaming.
IBM in particular has many options between performance, portability, and even tablet-like devices.
- I assumed you were asking about PCs specifically because there is pretty much only one agreed standard in the world of audio, and that is a Macintosh.
- While not as flexible as many PCs, you can count on almost every major audio software company to follow any hardware trends that Apple pushes. All of their laptop options offer a great set of features( besides an all-important audio-in for many low end Macbooks. Tech Support is just down the street, literally. I rarely have heard of anyone regretting buying a Mac, while I myself almost always regret buying PCs. Then again, I still have and use my Toshiba from '95 because it works directly for my application and does exactly what I need, no fancy bells and whistles!
Best of luck,
