Hi Sébastien and all - can't help but respond with more self-publicity..., but the DVD is available here:
http://www.dmandlr.co.uk - a bargain at 10 UKP
The issue of documentation is an important part of our research. Clearly a CD/DVD (re)cording renders the live performance 'unlive'. It's a document of a event from the past. With this is mind, it is frustrating to note our apparent cultural requirement for the consumption of art as ‘documentation’. We do produce (slightly against my wishes but as a result of living in the real world) short-run CD’s of our performances plus a DVD-ROM (the DVD mentioned above) of an early event. However, we are researching more meaningful forms of documentation by creating new interchange formats that will allow for the real-time spatialization and mixing of audio. Plus, we wish to document the following description of ‘live’…
The presence of a live performer who takes decisions and/or actions during a performance which change the real sounding nature of the music.
Simon Emmerson (DMU)
[live means] I was there, … unique and unrepeatable, live means more than one person, … human-to-human contact.
Simon Morgan (UH)
So - how do you document that...? Well, at UH, we are at early stages with that one. Any comments welcome.
Cheers,
Rob

Hi all - without wanting to get into a definition battle of EA (have we done that before on this list?... - joke!), it's easy enough to state that hip hop can be, or is, EA. I'll leave others to battle that one.
I think the live (liveness) issue is a much more interesting one. A major part of our research at UH Music focuses around this area (liveness - where technology is a significant factor). I'm involved in a collaborative threesome (err...) between a poet/rapper, a live hip hop beats person and myself.
Work began on Alyona (the name of the work) as a means of finding methods for delivering a large and complex text in a live capacity. Central to the process, were the performers’ requirements to ‘play’ and communicate with an audience. The interdisciplinary nature of Alyona is explored through live performance. The ‘conventions’ of Hip-Hop are juxtaposed with the ‘conventions’ of immersive acousmatic sound. All aspects of the work are performed live and in real-time limiting the amount (and perception) of pre-rendered audio presented to the audience.

We've never sat down and had a conversation re. 'can hip hop inspire ea?' But we have thought very hard about how our work is performed and what this means to an audience. Here, hip hop performance has definitely inspired the presentation of the immersive acousmatic sound. The old chestnut re. much EA/acousmatic music being poorly presented or performed is still valid. We have much to learn from the commercial sector if such a categorization has to be made.
Sorry for the additional self-publicity...
