2011 will mark the beginning of an annual juried audio art festival hosted
by AKA. Sounds Like… aims to bring together artists from across the country
and beyond to share their work and processes. The festival's title
references both simile and charades, speaking to the performative and
interdisciplinary aspects of the work to be examined here. Along those
lines, the inaugural year of the festival will examine various ways in which
the movement and actions of a performer relate to the auditory content.

Audio artists will be selected from this call for proposals to reflect the
diversity of approaches to creating live sound within contemporary
practices. Opportunities will be made for interested participants to
collaborate with other artists in the development of new works through
workshops and research in the week leading up to the performances to be held
May 27th and 28th.

To be considered for inclusion in the festival, please forward a submission
package containing the following: a cover letter, an artist statement and
proposal of no more than 300 words outlining how your practice relates to
the festival’s theme, an artist CV, a CD of 3-5 original works under 5
minutes in length, or a total playing time of under 15 minutes, (please
indicate if track is an excerpt) in mp3 format, a printed track listing
including title and date. Note: applicants are strongly encouraged to
include a DVD with video documentation (under five minutes) of previous
performances if available. A self-addressed stamped envelope with sufficient
postage must accompany any materials you wish to have returned.

*The deadline for applications is March 1st.*

AKA is committed to paying artist fees as outlined in the CARFAC schedule
and provision will be made for travel and accommodations.

*Should you have any questions, please contact gallery director Tod Emel at

How does that sound?
