*New York, NY*---Composer, instrument designer, performer *Juraj Kojs
*curates a January 13th performance as part of *MATA's INTERVAL* concert
series, joining such esteemed former curators as SO Percussion, the
Calder Quartet, and The Knights Chamber Orchestra. Held at 8:00 p.m. at
the Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, the concert will feature works by
young composers *Paula Matthusen, Spencer Topel, Jorge Variego, Sarah
O'Holloran, Margaret Schedel, and Chikashi Miyami.*

Showcasing their unique approaches to extending, hybridizing, and
abstracting instrument design, composition, and performance, these
composers seek an experience beyond mere collaboration, and into the
realm of true integration of the composer, performer, and instrument,
fusing the three into a unique whole.

While Paula Matthusen's laptop ensemble composition /lathyrus/
re-contextualizes an existing technology musically, Spencer Topel's
/Violine/ expands the timbral possibilities of an existing instrument
with novel digital techniques. In Jorge Variego's /Mimic/, a clarinet
and joystick game controller share control over the music creation and
performance, and in Juraj Kojs' /At and Across/, the Slovakian sheep
bells and digitally modeled bell structures fuse the physical and cyber
sonic spaces. Sarah O'Halloran and Margaret Schedel paired to craft an
interactive multimodal composition ./..linger figure flutter...,/
engaging a narrator, the Zeta cello, K-Bow controller and video. The
program concludes with Chikashi Miyama's /Black Vox/, which the composer
performs on his homemade non-tangible Peacock instrument.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased directly from the Issue Project
Room's website, www.issueprojecroom.org <http://www.issueprojecroom.org>.

This program is supported in part by a grant from Meet the Composer's
Cary New Music Performance Fund.

ABOUT MATA

MATA is a non-profit organization dedicated to *commissioning and
presenting works by young composers from around the world.* Now in its
14^th year, MATA's directors are motivated by a desire to create
community among young musicians, especially those whose work defies
definition and doesn't fit into existing institutions. By providing
young composers with a professional performance of their work, access to
first-rate performers and valuable connections to colleagues, MATA
nurtures their entry into American musical life.
Founded in 1996 by *Philip Glass, Eleonor Sandresky, and Lisa Bielawa*,
MATA presents pieces by young composers on a 4-day festival, held each
spring in New York City, featuring several works commissioned
specifically by MATA for the festival, and performed by professional
musicians from around the world. In 2007 MATA initiated *INTERVAL, a
bi-monthly concert series dedicated to young composers presented in
conjunction with Brooklyn's Issue Project Room.* Participants in our
Curatorial Associate Program, an internship designed to teach young
artists the basics of concert production and arts administration, curate
each concert on the INTERVAL series.
To date, MATA has commissioned over 61 works, and has presented over 260
performances of pieces by young composers. Composers who have been
commissioned or presented by MATA early in their careers include
Pulitzer-prize winner Jennifer Higdon, Derek Bermel, Yotam Haber, Annie
Gosfield, Julia Wolfe, Nico Muhly, and Randall Woolf. In 2010 MATA
received the prestigious Aaron Copland Award from the ASCAP Foundation,
in recognition of its outstanding commitment to young composers.
