I believe you can also apply for a temporary business visa. Visa procedures for Canadians are not usually as stringent as they are for other international visitors. I'm not sure how it works, but it might not be too stressful: http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1265.html. Payment is a little bit of a weird issue because normally you need a SSN, which you can only apply for if you have an employer.. so it's well worth it to contact the consulate or embassy to find out how that works. If it's not too sketchy to do this, you might ask if they would be willing to pay you in cash.
