just because something is open source does not
automatically mean it hasn't been proofed and
respects typographical traditions. and
seriously, i have seen a lot of "properly"
published literature that suffers from these
problems as well. there are a lot of factors
behind the changes in standards, but it is too
simple to simply put the blame on open source.
the issue is, as you yourslf have suggested, very
complex.
an entire issue on open source for audio
application was published by the CEC recently:
