In case of open access, the readers can have the cake for free, while
the authors pay for publishing.
That's true, to do research you are typically funded, but not always.
And if you author have to pay 500$ to publish an article, well, it
depends on how much you have funds -be them academic or personal-
that year.
I have had both experience, and I'm not really satisfied by anyone.
And to publish your stuff by just putting it on a site without a real
proof reading, a real typographic design etc, a reviewing process etc
is not satisfying too.
It's a complicated issue, indeed
