I have always been of the opinion that evaluations of artistic work should
be pass/fail, possibly with an explaining paragraph.
The life of an artist is a constant series of strict and unforgiving
evaluations, by self and by others, and those of a teacher are the least
important in the long run.So if you cannot pass/fail, just give everyone an
A or an A+ and let "the market" and the "culture vultures" and the
self-doubt of each student do the rest. It is not a kind world, and each A
may help with those who do not understand art - those who do understand it
will never look at grades anyhow.
