Thanks Andrew and all,
It seems that quite amazingly there is a general agreement
1. Sound Devices units being the best sounding and most durable
2. Fostex being the best deal for sounding really good for only $600,
but with some interface and ruggedness issues
3. Tascam hd-p2 is very good but a little expensive
4. Stay away from the misleadingly very attractive Zoom H4 (for $300)
because its preamps are noisy
5. Nobody mentioned the Sony PCM-D1 which looks really nice and sounds
pretty good but (I read) not worth $2000
6. Roland and M-audio field recorders are not worth mentioning for
pro-sound (preamps)
7. Sony HD is nice for its size but not good for pro sound (because it
only goes as high as 16 bit and the type of connections)
8. Did I miss anything?
Does anyone have experience with the Korg MR-1000 (1-bit) field recorder?
Cheers
Eldad
