For field recording where I want something compact and portable - I
use the H4 Handy Recorder made by Zoom. It has two built in mics and
also has 2 xlr inputs. You can mount it as a hard drive on your
computer and use it as an audio interface as well. I have been
using it for almost a year and have no complaints with it. I have
used the edirol r-9 and found it to be good as well.
