This is a trivial pet peeve of mine.

I realize that single-quote ' and double-quote " are used with angle
measurement, but I've never liked the colon : for duration. To me,
it denotes time, which is a separate issue.

To me, 4:17 refers to a time of day, not a duration

I prefer 4'17" because (to me) it suggestions duration.

With angle measurement, 4'17" marks a difference from 0'0" - just
like 4'17" in time duration marks a difference from 0'0".

But 4:17 does not mark a difference from anything (is it 4:17am or
4:17pm?) it simply marks a moment in time (not a duration).

Sorry to belabor the point ;) Whenever I have the ability to
determine how duration is communicated, I use quotes, even though
it's not widely accepted.
