TORONTO ELECTROACOUSTIC SYMPOSIUM

Canada

University of Toronto and New Adventures in Sound Art are pleased to
present the 2007 Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium. The symposium
will take place at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, 9-10
August 2007, and will lead directly into the main performance weekend
of the annual Sound Travels festival on Toronto Island.
The proceedings of the symposium will be published in a forthcoming
issue of the CEC's online journal, eContact!.

symposium will feature keynote lectures by Sound Travels' composers-
in-residence Barry Truax and Trevor Wishart. A late-night event
hosted by the angelusnovus.net group will provide a space for live
electronic and improvised expressions in an "open-mic" format.
SOUNDwalks led by Nadene Thériault-Copeland
(August 10th 7pm, 11th 7pm, 12th 1pm plus more TBA)
Note: these SOUNDwalks lead directly into the performances on the
August 10-12 weekend
co-produced with the Canadian Association for Sound Ecology
(meet at the clock tower on Centre Island where the ferry drops you off)
In a soundwalk, the listening "audience" moves through a place and
the environment "performs." The walking listener and the environment
create a unique piece together that can only occur during the time of
the walk. In a soundwalk we take the time to hear the environment: we
are its true ear witnesses. And like any musician, the environment
offers us its sounds for our consideration. Participants should be
sure to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for any weather
condition.
CONTINUING DATES
SOUND TRAVELS INDOOR INTERACTIVE INSTALLATIONS
July 22-Sept 2 Sundays 2-6 pm PWYC (recommended $5)
St. Andrew-by-the-Lake Church
Two interactive sound installations will be included in the indoor
portion of Sign Waves 2007 at St. Andrew-by-the-Lake on Centre
Island. Lori Beckstead and David Rose's "The Whispering Tree" is an
interactive sound sculpture that absorbs the sound around it, and
then retransmits those sounds. Secrets told to the tree become part
of a continuous soundscape emitted by the tree, but the secrets are
only partly revealed, as secrets are veiled and mixed together. Over
time, the tree becomes a wise old repository of all that has happened
around it, containing and sometimes revealing all that it has
learned. Also included on an interactive computer are the Toronto
Island Sound Map (Don Sinclair and Darren Copeland), Around Radio
Roadmovies (Chantal Dumas, Christian Calon and Don Sinclair) as well
as a Listening Gallery allowing gallery goers to listen to past Sound
Travels performances while viewing the "Sound Travels Documents"
Photo Exhibit by Stefan Rose.
SYNTHECYCLETRON by Barry Prophet
OUTDOOR INTERACTIVE SOUND SCULPTURE
a work in progress - please see web-site for more info
once open will remain open 24/7 until October 1st
just east of the pier on the south side of Centre Island, Toronto
Islands
Barry Prophet's "Synthecycletron" is an interactive sound sculpture
on which participants generate power by pedaling and in turn generate
sounds.
Anyone can perform on this interactive sound sculpture. Thanks to the
City of Toronto for supporting the presentation of the Sound Travels
outdoor installations once again on Toronto Island.
Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art is partially funded by the
Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage, the
Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the Toronto
Arts Council and the SOCAN foundation.
New Adventures in Sound Art is a non-profit organization that
produces performances and installations spanning the entire spectrum
of electroacoustic and experimental sound art. Included in its
Toronto productions are: Deep Wireless, Sound Travels & SOUNDplay.
