Binaural Audio Art Symposium
Music Centre, Edward Street, University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK
Sunday 15th July
Listening session from 10.30am. Presentations 1.30pm - 5.45pm

Binaural recordings, often but not always made using small microphones worn in the ears, have been used by a variety of artists presenting pieces over headphones to vividly recreate soundscapes, to focus on the spatialization of sound, to present the subjective point-of-audition of a performer, to discretely record public activity, or to create relationships between the virtual events on a recording and the actual events surrounding a travelling listener. At a time when rising online activity means an increasing number of people are listening to audio using headphones it is particularly appropriate to consider the potential for binaural audio. This one day event should be of interest to anyone from the uninitiated to the experienced binaural audio artist.

In the morning attendees will be able to move between listening stations to hear pieces by Alastair Brown, Ashiq Khondker, The Binaural Orchestra, China Blue, Dallas Simpson, David Prior, Duncan Whitley, Gintas K, Holly Rumble, James Wyness, John Levack Drever, Jon Aveyard, Joseph Young, Lisa Whistlecroft, Matthew Barnard, Pei-Yu Shi, Pete Kelly and Viv Corringham. (Programme subject to confirmation.)

In the afternoon there will be presentations by Dallas Simpson, Sara Heitlinger and Duncan Whitley on their compositional techniques and principles, Lorenzo Picanilo will talk about converting multi-channel pieces by Leigh Landy and Peter Batchelor to binaural, and The Binaural Orchestra will give a performance/presentation on binaural beating. The day will conclude with an improvisational performance by theybreakinpieces & Jon Aveyard using in-ear microphones and found sound objects.

Some headphones will be available but attendees are advised to bring their own.
Light snacks and refreshments will be available.
Please contact JAveyard@uclan.ac.uk if you plan to attend – this isn’t essential but will assist with organizing catering and technical requirements.
