Conference pass $150/$130 gets you into all Deep WIreless
performances + Conference
Performance pass $50/$40 gets you into all Deep Wireless
performances (6 concerts)
  e-mail naisa@naisa.ca for more info

TRANS-LOCAL PERFORMANCE
May 10th, 7pm @ inter/access & Gallery 1313 (simultaneously)
$5 gets you into both performances (they are a short walk from each
other)

This performance will address the various ways people can affect
radio space. How living things can manipulate electromagnetic
radiation. Contact mics can be used to get the body and human
environment into radio space. They can be thought of as reproducing
physical motion/contact instead of sound (sound is just the way we
perceive the signal they carry). For example, if you put a contact
mic up to your heart and plug it directly into a radio transmitter,
then your heartbeat is directly modulating radio waves. The piece is
about translating or 'translocating' the physical environment into
radio space, as apposed to creating new content for the radio.

Live sounds will be collected in the gallery and outside on the
street with the use of contact microphones and a cell phone. There
will be an audience participation aspect in collecting sounds
(getting folks to play with contact mics, etc.). Michelle Irving and
Stephen Kelly will be performing at Gallery 1313, Anna Friz at inter/
access and Eleanor King will be performing in the outdoor spaces in
between and Tetsuo from afar. Audience is encouraged to participate
by bringing a radio and a cell phone.

RADIO _KONTAKTE_ CONCERT
May 24th, 8pm @ the Ryerson Student Campus Centre (Alumni Room)
$15/$10 (free for conference registrants)

Karlheinz Stockhausen's classic work _Kontakte_ will be presented by
Kevin Austin (Montreal) in its original 4-channel version, a rare
treat, alongside _Figures de la Nuit / Faces of the Night_ by Francis
Dhomont and other works included on the newly released Deep Wireless
4 radio art compilation CD. Kontakte predates many trends in
electronic music by decades and was produced at the famous WDR
studios in Koln, Germany in 1959.

Francis Dhomont's lush bilingual radiophonic work _Figures de la
Nuit / Faces of the Night_ was commissioned by CKLN, Toronto in 1991
for the radio program Transfigured Night hosted by David Olds. Other
pieces include _L_ by Elsa Justel and an excerpt from Martine
Crispo's _Transitive Property of Equailty_. This concert will be
spatialized by NAISA artistic director Darren Copeland. Free CD with
admission.

RADIO THEATRE 1 (with It Is To Laugh)
May 25 @ the Ryerson Student Campus Centre (Alumni Room)
55 Gould Street, doors open 7:30pm show start 8pm
$15/$10 (free for conference registrants)

The "It is to Laugh" radio comedy series creators Dan Bernard &
Michael Townsend from Portland, Maine team up with Toronto actors/
performers for a trans-comedy extravaganza. Also included in the
evenings are the works commissioned for CBC Outfront by Steve Wadhams
and Sarah Boothroyd.

A surreal, stream-of-consciousness mix of comedic vignettes, clips,
commercials and cast-off synapse firings, fulfilling the festival’s
Trans-X framework with fervor and tongue firmly in cheek - ITL

RADIO THEATRE 2 (with It Is To Laugh)
May 26th @ the Ryerson Student Campus Centre (Alumni Room)
55 Gould Street, doors open 7:30pm show start 8pm
$15/$10 (free for conference registrants)

Same zany group as on May 25th performing a very different show of
"It is to Laugh" radio trans-comedy. Also included in the evenings
are the works commissioned for CBC Outfront by Robert Hoare and
Thelon Oeming.

Chock-full of music, satire and outrageous political satire, IITL
examines Mr. bin Laden's love of all things Canadian. A trans-
national current-affairs gag-fest gauged to stimulate gi-normous
guffaws.-ITL

RADiO iN AMBiENCE @ THE AMBiENT PiNG
May 29 @ 8pm, $5
The Drake Hotel, Underground

The Ambient Ping presents Radio in Ambience once again. Listen to
Toronto/Berlin sound artist Robert Hoare and the Halifax duo Stephen

worldly electro ambient chill.

3) DEEP WIRELESS INSTALLATIONS:
May 2-27@ Gallery 1313, Process Gallery
    1313 Queen Street West, Toronto
_Radio Roam_ by Eleanor King & Stephen Kelly
_Radio Art Salon_ curated by Darren Copeland

Recline in an alternate sounding universe in 50's style hair salon
chairs transformed into radio art listening lounges. Running for the
entire month of May, the _Radio Art_ Salon includes a program of
radio art works curated by Darren Copeland that includes
contributions from Resonance FM in the UK, from Kunstradio in Austria
(sponsored by the Austria Cultural Forum) and content drawn from the
Deep Wireless international call for submissions on the theme of
Trans-X.

_Radio Roam_ is a radio transmission installation work. It uses many
radios installed in the gallery space, each tuned to a different
frequency on the FM dial. A variable transmitter sends out an audio
signal and automatically changes the broadcasting frequency based on
motion activity within the space. The audio signal "jumps" from one
radio to another, creating a surround sound experience for the
gallery visitor. It is intended that the transmitted audio blend with
the bleed from other high power FM stations, to create an ever
changing collage of radio sounds, in real time. - Eleanor King &
Stephen King.

4) DEEP WIRELESS WORKSHOP
HOW TO MAKE A CONTACT MIC by STEPHEN KELLY
      May 9th @ 6pm, $35 (must pre-register naisa@naisa.ca)
      @ inter/access, 9 Ossington Ave., Toronto

(only 2 spots left in this workshop)

Contact Microphones respond to vibrations through physical surfaces
and translate that motion into sound. Contact mics can be used to
capture various sounds such as a heart beat, the sound of pencil on
paper, or vibrations from a musical instrument. These mics are cheap,
easy to build, and can be a source for fun and experimental ways of
creating new sounds for radio, installations or performances. For
this workshop, Stephen Kelly and Eleanor King will facilitate making
simple yet effective contact microphones from singing greeting cards.
Each person will take home their own contact microphone, no
experience in electronics required.

NOTE: There are four other workshops included during the Deep
Wireless 2007 festival which are scheduled during the Radio Without
Boundaries conference May 26th & 27th. Go to <http://www.naisa.ca/
RWB/sessions.html#listeining> for more information.

experimental realm to approach the form of personal narrative from a
perspective that combines words and sounds in a fresh and innovative
fashion. Four Canadian artists - Sarah Boothroyd, Steve Wadhams,
Thelon Oeming and Robert Hoare - were selected from a Canada-wide
call for submissions to produce a work for both CBC's Outfront radio
broadcast and for presentation during Deep Wireless 2007 festival of
radio and transmission art. The four commissioned works will be
broadcast in May 2007 and will also be presented during the
conference weekend performances.

and every year. This 9th edition of the annual festival will once
again feature the Sign Waves installation series of sound sculptures
and sound installations as well as outdoor and indoor concerts, site-
specific performances, soundwalks, artist talks and workshops.

Our Sound Travels 2007 plans include Trevor Wishart and Barry Truax
as composers-in-residence whose music will be featured in Sound
Travels. Barry and Trevor will mentor the creation of 4 new works by
local emerging artists Hector Centeno, Tony Leung, Charlotte Scott
and Monica Clorey in our emerging artist residency. Their works will
be presented during the Sound Travels concert weekend alongside world
premieres by Trevor Wishart and Rose Bolton, Barry Truax, Randy Raine
Reusch and Mei Han.

OUTDOOR SOUND SCULPTURES on Toronto Island
June 1st - October 1st open 24/7 FREE
Special performance/reception June 24th at 1pm
+ more performances each month TBA

Two semi-permanent outdoor sound sculptures will be featured as part
of Sound Travels: Barry Prophet’s "Synthecycletron" on which
participants will generate power by pedaling which will in turn
activate synthesizers and generate sounds; "Sonic Boardwalk", by
Robert Mulder and Kristi Allik, located on the Ward's Island
boardwalk, that generates a microsound landscape activated by the
kinetic imprint of passing visitors. There are several performances
scheduled to happen using the sound sculptures as instruments.
Thanks to the City of Toronto for supporting the presentation of
these sound sculptures once again on Toronto Island.

INDOOR SOUND INSTALLATIONS
July 22 - Sept 2, 2007 Sundays only 2-6pm
St. Andrew by-the-Lake church
PWYC (recommended $5)
with special performance on July 22 ($15/10)

Special opening performance/reception July 22nd 2pm with a
performance by Christine Duncan, James Bailey and Rob Piilonen.

Two interactive sound installations will be included in the indoor
portion of Sign Waves 2007 at St. Andrew-by-the-Lake on Centre
Island. Lori Beckstead and David Rose's "The Whispering Tree" is an
interactive sound sculpture that absorbs the sound around it, and
then retransmits those sounds. Secrets told to the tree become part
of a continuous soundscape emitted by the tree, but the secrets are
only partly revealed, as secrets are veiled and mixed together. Over
time, the tree becomes a wise old repository of all that has happened
around it, containing and sometimes revealing all that it has
learned. Also included on an interactive computer are the Toronto
Island Sound Map (Don Sinclair and Darren Copeland), Around Radio
Roadmovies (Chantal Dumas, Charistian Calon and Don Sinclair) as well
as a Listening Gallery allowing gallery goers to listen to past Sound
Travels performances while viewing the "Sound Travels Documents"
Photo Exhibit by Stefan Rose.

SOUNDwalks & WORKSHOP dates and venue TBA - see www.soundtravels.ca
for updates

SOUNDwalks led by Nadene Thériault-Copeland (some dates included
above and more TBA)
co-produced with the Canadian Association for Sound Ecology

In a soundwalk, the listening “audience” moves through a place and
the environment “performs.” The walking listener and the environment
create a unique piece together that can only occur during the time of
the walk. In a soundwalk we take the time to hear the environment: we
are its true ear witnesses. And like any musician, the environment
offers us its sounds for our consideration. Participants should be
sure to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for any weather
condition.

What Zen - A World of Improvisation
Mei Han, Randy Raine-Reusch
A dual perspective on improvisation from a traditionally trained
Chinese performer learning to play jazz and free improv, and to a
westerner’s exploration of Asian instruments as vehicles for his
expression. We will explore ancient Asian musical aesthetics and
musical forms like those in the Taoist and Zen inspired musics of
Japn and China that are a constant wellspring of inspiration for
contemporary artists from Debussey, to Cage, to Coltrane, to today’s
emerging artists. This will be an interactive workshop, so
instruments are welcome.

Vocal(eze) workshops by Trevor Wishart

Workshops designed to teach you the basics of vocal improvisation.
If you are a vocal performer and someone with and interest in
creating sound with your voice, this workshop is designed to work
with you no matter what your level of training. Special workshop for
