slrn: bypassing the start-up script
When you invoke "slrn", you actually get a small script, which checks whether you (seem to) have used slrn before, and whether your environment is set up. The script, having made its checks and possibly set up your environment, then invokes the real slrn.
The reason for this script is to ensure that novice users don't run into trouble because they don't have a "News" subdirectory, and to give them a chance to set up scoring and filtering easily. The script ensures that each user has a "News" subdirectory, and a scorefile called "News/Score".
If you have configured slrn to work differently for you, and you don't want the script to run, you can invoke the "real" slrn directly under the name "slrn.real".
