Reporting Harrassment
When you are forwarding an e-mail message for the purpose of reporting
harrassment or some mail-related problem to a system administrator or
postmaster, it is essential that you forward the message intact and
with full headers. Here is how to do it from Pine.
- Select the offending message and open it so that you can see its
contents.
- Press 'h' and see what the status bar near the bottom of your Pine
screen says.
- If it says Command "h" not defined for this screen,
then go to the
Pine setup screen, and among the configurable choices, check off
(put an X in) enable-full-header-cmd. Then press 'h'
again; it should work now.
- If it says Display of full headers is now on, you're
all set.
- If it says Display of full headers is now off,
hit 'h' again to turn it back on.
- Now that you have full headers turned on, just hit 'f' to forward
the message. (If Pine asks you whether or not to send it as an
attachment, reply 'no'.)
- If you are reporting harrassment, or a problem with an
Alcor user, send the message to root@alcor.concordia.ca.
- If the problem is with an offsite user, send the message
to the postmaster or the "abuse" address at the offender's site.
For example, if you received unwanted e-mail from
'jsmith@blah.bigschool.edu', then send your complaint to
'postmaster@bigschool.edu', or to 'abuse@bigschool.edu'. Better
yet, complain directly to the user, but send a carbon copy
("cc" header) to the postmaster.
