Alcor... General E-mail Issues

Frequently Asked Questions about electronic mail:

How do I forward my mail to another account?

In your home directory, make a file called .forward (note the period in front!) containing nothing but the address to which you want your mail redirected. You can forward to two addresses by putting two addresses separated by a comma in your .forward file. Using something like:

me@some.other.address, me_also@some.other.address.too
will result in your mail being sent to both email addresses. You can also save copies of your email on your alcor account by inserting a filename instead of an email address in your .forward file:
me@some.other.address, /full/path/to/filename
which will forward you email to me@... as well as saving your email in the file "/full/path/to/filename"; make sure you specify a file in a location to which your account has write permission, such as your home directory.

Be very careful. If you make a mistake you won't receive any of your mail. If you specify an invalid address, the mail will bounce back to the sender. If you specify an address which exists, then that account will get your mail! It is always a good idea to test the forwarding address (the first time you make it and every time you modify it) by sending some mail to yourself.

You must not create a mail loop by forwarding from account A to account B and then from account B back to A again. A message that gets sent to either A or B will bounce between the two accounts until the mail application eventually stops the loop.

It is also possible to forward some or all of your mail using procmail, a general purpose mail filtering and handling program.

My mail (my friend's mail) is bouncing! What do these error messages mean?

There are a number of reasons for mail to bounce (or return to the sender). The best thing to do is to take a careful look at the email message that came back. In general, it will tell you what went wrong.

Here are the most common reasons messages bounce. Each link points to a sample header of a bounce message in which we have highlighted the critical information.

In general, you can find out what went wrong by examining what the mail system sent back to you.

I can't send mail to "ALCOR::USERNAME". Why not?

Alcor is not running DECnet mail, so cannot accept mail addressed to "ALCOR::USERNAME". Instead, please use the Internet-style address "username@alcor.concordia.ca". This applies to both e-mail sent in the usual way, and to mail forwarding.

What do I do about annoying e-mailed ads?

Write to the person that sent you this mail and cc the letter to the postmaster of that site (postmaster@that.site). Tell them that you do not wish to receive any further mail of that sort and attach the message that had been mailed to you (for the postmaster's benefit). There is no need to mail the alcor system administrator.

You can use procmail to automatically bounce messages from addresses you specify.

Help! I just received an e-mail warning about a computer virus!

Don't panic; it's almost certainly a hoax.
